If you grew up in India in the 1990s, the name "Sierra" brings back strong memories — that boxy, distinctive SUV with the signature alpine-style rear glass that turned heads everywhere it went. Tata Motors has kept that memory alive, and now, more than three decades later, the Sierra nameplate is making a comeback in the most exciting way possible — as a fully electric SUV.

On June 19, 2026, Tata released the first official teaser of the Sierra EV ahead of its June 30 debut. Tata Motors is expected to launch the electric Sierra in India on June 30, 2026, a date that fits with an earlier earnings call where Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director and CEO of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, confirmed the Sierra EV's arrival in Q2 FY2026-27.

This will be Tata's 7th electric car, and if the early signs are anything to go by, it could be one of the most exciting EV launches India has seen this year.

A Long Road to Production

The Sierra EV has been a long time coming. First introduced in the early 1990s, the Tata Sierra remains a cult classic among Indian SUV enthusiasts. The Sierra EV was first showcased in concept form at the Auto Expo 2020 and once again at the Auto Expo 2023. In late 2025, its production-spec version was teased along with the ICE Sierra, giving a glimpse of its final look.

The six-year journey from concept to production shows just how seriously Tata has taken this launch. They did not want to rush it.

Design: Nostalgia Meets Modern EV

The Sierra EV carries the bold, upright character of the original into the electric age — and it looks great for it.

The Sierra EV features an upright stance, flat bonnet, and boxy proportions that pay homage to the original Sierra from the '90s, while smooth surfaces, connected LED lighting, and flush door handles bring it straight into the EV era. Up front, you get a sleek LED light bar running the full width of the car, neatly integrated with slim headlamps and a closed-off grille — a signature look for Tata's electric lineup.

The distinctive blacked-out rear window section is back — instantly recognisable to anyone who remembers the old Sierra. At the rear, the design features a full-width LED tail lamp that gives the SUV a wide, planted stance.

The Sierra EV also features distinct EV-specific styling cues including a blanked-off grille, a revised front bumper, and as with other Tata EVs, you can expect ".ev" badging around the car. The reference article from Aaj Tak also notes that the car is expected to come with 19-inch wheels.

Platform: Built on Proven Electric Architecture

The Sierra EV is likely to use Tata's acti.ev+ architecture, the same platform as the Harrier EV. This is reassuring news for buyers, because the Harrier EV has already proven itself to be a solid, well-engineered electric vehicle in the Indian market.

Using a proven platform also means Tata can carry over the battery technology, motor setup, and charging infrastructure that buyers already trust — while bringing the Sierra's unique personality to the equation.

Battery and Range: The Numbers You Want to Know

This is where things get really interesting.

Like the Harrier EV, the Sierra EV is expected to offer 65 kWh and 75 kWh battery options. Vivek Srivastava, Chief Commercial Officer at Tata Motors, has indicated both rear-wheel drive (RWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD) variants, with AWD likely limited to the 75 kWh version.

The Aaj Tak reference article reports that since the Harrier EV already offers a claimed range of 622 km, the Sierra EV could deliver even more than 600 km of claimed range on a full charge. The Sierra EV aims to offer an expected driving range of up to 550 km across variants, with top-spec figures potentially exceeding that.

For everyday Indian driving — city commutes, weekend road trips, or highway runs — these numbers mean you are unlikely to worry about running out of charge.

Triple Screen Cabin: Welcome to the Future

Step inside, and the Sierra EV shows exactly where Tata's ambitions lie.

Top trims may get a triple-screen setup: a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a 12.3-inch central touchscreen, and a 12.3-inch passenger display. Lower trims could offer dual screens and a head-up display (HUD).

Other likely features include a panoramic sunroof, powered and ventilated front seats, multiple drive modes, and a premium audio system.

The cabin also looks minimalistic and airy, with a strong focus on making it feel roomy. You will also spot Tata's four-spoke steering wheel with an illuminated Tata logo, as seen on their recent launches.

Safety: Tata's Strongest Suit

Tata Motors has built one of the strongest safety reputations in India, and the Sierra EV is expected to keep that tradition alive.

The concept showcased features like Level-2 ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems), electronic stability control (ESC), hill hold assist, tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), and a 360-degree camera. Expect up to six or seven airbags, ABS with EBD, and more as part of its safety suite.

Level-2 ADAS in this price range is a significant offering — it means the car can assist with steering, braking, and lane keeping on highways, reducing driver fatigue considerably.

AWD: Because India's Roads Demand It

Tata Sierra EV has been teased with AWD capability, with a Harrier EV-like dual-motor setup on offer with the upcoming SUV.

This is big news. An AWD electric SUV in the Rs 18–25 lakh range gives buyers genuine all-terrain confidence — whether it is a monsoon-soaked city road, a hilly weekend drive to Mussoorie, or an off-road trail in the hills. The AWD variant is expected to come paired exclusively with the larger 75 kWh battery pack.

Expected Price: Positioned Smartly

The Sierra EV is expected to be priced in the Rs 18 lakh to Rs 25 lakh ballpark, as it will be positioned between the Curvv EV, which ranges from Rs 16.99 lakh to Rs 19.19 lakh, and the Harrier EV, which costs Rs 21.49 lakh to Rs 28.99 lakh.

This pricing puts the Sierra EV right in the sweet spot — premium enough to feel aspirational, but accessible enough to compete seriously with the Mahindra BE 6, Hyundai Creta Electric, and MG ZS EV.

Who Will It Compete With?

The Tata Sierra EV will rival the likes of the Mahindra BE 6, Hyundai Creta Electric, MG ZS EV, and Maruti e Vitara in the mid-size electric SUV segment.

In that company, the Sierra EV's combination of a heritage-rich design, AWD option, over-600 km claimed range, and triple-screen technology gives it real competitive firepower. Very few rivals in this price range offer all of these together.

Why the Sierra EV Matters for India

Alongside the Tiago EV, Punch EV, Nexon EV, Curvv EV, and Harrier EV, the Sierra EV will further expand Tata Motors' electric vehicle portfolio and reinforce its commitment to India's EV transition.

But beyond the portfolio strategy, the Sierra EV matters for a more human reason. It carries a name that millions of Indian car lovers grew up respecting. Bringing that name back as a zero-emission SUV — packed with the latest technology — says something about where Indian automobiles are headed. The Sierra started as a symbol of bold Indian design in the 1990s. In 2026, it is becoming a symbol of India's electric future.

Final Word

The Tata Sierra EV has everything it needs to be a landmark launch. Great design rooted in nostalgia, a proven electric platform, 600+ km claimed range, triple-screen luxury, AWD capability, Level-2 ADAS safety, and a price that makes sense. All official numbers and final features will be confirmed at the launch event on June 30, 2026 — but based on everything we know so far, the wait looks very much worth it.
