Volkswagen India has widened its premium SUV lineup with the launch of the Tayron Life, a new five-seater variant priced at ₹41.99 lakh (ex-showroom). Announced on July 10, 2026, the Tayron Life slots in below the range-topping Tayron R-Line and is designed to bring the model's German engineering, space, and technology to a wider set of buyers at a more accessible price point, roughly ₹5 lakh cheaper than the R-Line, which was launched earlier this year at ₹46.99 lakh.
This marks Volkswagen India's third major product action of 2026 and the second locally assembled model introduced this year, reinforcing the brand's push to strengthen its presence in the premium SUV segment against rivals like the Skoda Kodiaq, Jeep Meridian, and Toyota Fortuner.
Why a "Life" Variant?
Until now, the Tayron was sold in India exclusively in the fully loaded, seven-seat R-Line trim. With the Life variant, Volkswagen has adopted a strategy similar to sister brand Skoda's approach with the Kodiaq, offering a more affordable, five-seater version of a larger three-row SUV. By dropping the third row of seats and some of the R-Line's sportier cosmetic touches, Volkswagen has been able to lower the entry price while keeping the core mechanical package, safety suite, and overall design identity intact.
Commenting on the launch, Nitin Kohli, Brand Director at Volkswagen Passenger Cars India, said the Tayron Life reflects the company's commitment to bringing global products tailored to Indian customer needs, and that it strengthens VW's premium SUV portfolio around performance, space, comfort, and driving confidence.
Design and Dimensions of Volkswagen Tayron Life
The Tayron Life retains the same overall silhouette and proportions as the R-Line, measuring 4,792 mm in length with a 2,789 mm wheelbase. However, it gets a slightly toned-down design:
· Connected LED headlamps and tail-lamps with an illuminated Volkswagen badge and light bar carried over from the R-Line
· A simpler, curvier front bumper without the R-Line's gloss-black inserts on the grille, wheel arch cladding, and bumper trim
· 18-inch "Bologna" alloy wheels — an inch smaller than the R-Line's units, with a design reminiscent of the Volkswagen Golf GTI's wheels
· Black roof rails, illuminated door handles, and projection lighting from the powered ORVMs
· Seven exterior colour options, including Dolphin Grey Metallic, Cipressino Green Metallic, Oyster Silver Metallic, Nightshade Blue Metallic, Ultraviolet Metallic, Oryx White Mother-of-Pearl Effect, and Grenadilla Black Metallic
Inside, the biggest visual change is a new dual-tone black and grey upholstery scheme, replacing the R-Line's all-black cabin for a brighter, more spacious feel. Sports pedals and ambient lighting are retained, though the Life variant misses out on the R-Line's badging.
Space and Practicality in Tayron Life
Practicality is one of the Tayron Life's biggest selling points. With the third row removed, the boot space grows significantly:
· 885 litres of boot space with the rear seats up
· Expandable to 2,090 litres with the rear seats folded down
This makes it a strong option for buyers who prioritise everyday luggage capacity and rear legroom over a third row of seats.
Interior and Technology of VW Life
The Tayron Life comes generously equipped for its segment, though a few premium items have been trimmed compared to the R-Line to justify the lower price:
· A large touchscreen infotainment system with a free-standing design, paired with a fully digital instrument cluster (reported between 10.2 and 10.25 inches across sources)
· Wireless and wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support
· Wireless charging for two smartphones
· An 8-speaker sound system (the R-Line's 11-speaker Harman Kardon setup is not offered here)
· Leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel with paddle shifters
· 3-zone automatic climate control
· Powered, ventilated, and heated front seats with memory function
· Multiple USB ports for front and rear occupants
· A panoramic sunroof
· Rain-sensing wipers and a rear-view camera (the R-Line's 360-degree camera setup is not carried over)
Safety of This New SUV
Safety remains a strong suit despite the lower price point. The Tayron Life comes with:
· 9 airbags as standard
· Level 2 ADAS with 14 driver assistance features, including adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, lane keeping assist, blind spot detection, rear traffic alert, exit warning, and driver drowsiness monitoring
· Electronic Stability Control (ESC)
· Hill Start Assist and Hill Descent Control
· Electronic differential lock (XDS)
· Tyre pressure monitoring system
· ISOFIX child seat anchors
· Electronic parking brake and front/rear parking sensors
Engine and Performance
Under the hood, the Tayron Life uses the same powertrain as the range-topping R-Line:
· 2.0-litre TSI EVO (EA888) turbo-petrol engine
· 204 PS (204 hp) and 320 Nm of torque
· 7-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission
· Standard 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system
· Independent suspension with McPherson struts at the front and a multi-link setup at the rear
Since the mechanical package is unchanged from the R-Line, buyers don't have to compromise on power, drivetrain, or all-wheel-drive capability to get into the more affordable Life variant.
Manufacturing
Like the R-Line, the Tayron Life is locally assembled at Volkswagen's Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (formerly Aurangabad) facility in Maharashtra, which helps keep costs — and consequently the price — in check compared to a fully imported model.
Pricing Snapshot
| Variant | Ex-showroom Price | Seating |
| Tayron Life | ₹41.99 lakh | 5-seater |
| Tayron R-Line | ₹46.99 lakh | 7-seater |
The on-road price of the Tayron Life will vary by city, but industry estimates for the equivalent R-Line trim put on-road pricing roughly ₹6–7 lakh above the ex-showroom figure, so buyers should expect a similar premium.
Rivals
The Volkswagen Tayron Life competes in a crowded premium SUV segment, going up against:
· Skoda Kodiaq (including its own five-seat Lounge trim)
· Jeep Meridian
· Toyota Fortuner (petrol variants)
· MG Majestor
Conclusion
The Tayron Life is a smart addition to Volkswagen's India lineup. By offering the same 204 PS/320 Nm engine, 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system, and Level 2 ADAS safety suite as the R-Line, just with a five-seat layout and slightly toned-down styling and feature list — Volkswagen has created a compelling, more attainable entry point into the Tayron range. For buyers who don't need a third row but want German engineering, strong performance, and a well-equipped cabin, the ₹41.99 lakh Tayron Life looks like one of the more interesting options in its price bracket.
