Mercedes-Benz VLE Unveiled: 8-Seater EV with 700+ KM Range

Mercedes-Benz has a long history of building vehicles that change what people expect from a car. The all-new VLE, which stands for Van Large Electric, might be their boldest statement yet. The VLE is not a minivan, not an SUV, and not a traditional limousine. It is something genuinely new.

Mercedes-Benz describes the VLE as a deliberate challenger to private aviation and first-class rail for door-to-door executive travel — a rolling sanctuary that happens to reach its destination on four wheels and zero direct emissions. That is a big claim, but as you'll see below, the numbers and features largely back it up.

The 2026 Mercedes-Benz VLE is the first model built on the automaker's brand-new Van Architecture (VAN.EA) platform. This is important because it means the VLE was designed from the ground up as an electric vehicle — not converted from a diesel van like its predecessor, the EQV.

Design: Big, Bold, and Surprisingly Sleek

The VLE is a large vehicle. There is no getting around that. At 5,486 mm long, 2,100 mm wide, and 1,892 mm tall, the Mercedes VLE is physically substantial — closer in footprint to a large commercial van than a traditional executive MPV.

Yet here is where the engineering gets impressive. The design team achieved a drag coefficient of just 0.25 in a vehicle this large, accomplished through flush surfaces, an optimized underbody, and active aerodynamic management of airflow around the wheel arches and lower body sections. For context, that is the same aerodynamic efficiency as many sleek sports sedans.

From the side, the VLE displays a long, streamlined silhouette designed to maximize both interior space and efficiency. The roofline stretches smoothly from the windshield to the rear, creating a low and elegant profile unusual for a vehicle with van-like practicality.

At the back, there is a huge inverted U-shaped light signature that makes the VLE instantly recognisable — and it is not just for show. The lighting is built into the rear spoiler to help manage airflow.

Battery, Range & Charging: The Numbers That Matter

This is where the VLE truly separates itself from anything else in its class.

The VLE gets a 115 kWh battery, with a provisional WLTP range of 397 miles — which is properly competitive. Mercedes' own official figure puts the range at more than 700 kilometres on the WLTP cycle.

Charging speed is equally impressive. The VLE uses an 800V electrical system and can charge at up to 315 kW. Mercedes says that could mean adding around 200 miles of range in just 15 minutes on a powerful enough charger. AC charging also improves, jumping from 11 kW to 22 kW.

To put that in perspective for Indian and global buyers: the previous EQV (the VLE's predecessor) maxed out at just 110 kW DC charging. The VLE is roughly three times faster. There will also be an 80 kWh version available in 2027 if you don't need quite as much range.

Powertrain Options: VLE 300 and VLE 400

Mercedes offers two powertrain variants to suit different buyers.

Customers can opt for the entry-level VLE 300 that sends 207 PS (203 hp) to the front wheels, while the VLE 400 4MATIC boasts a dual-motor setup with a combined output of 311 PS (305 hp).

The VLE 300 is front-wheel drive with a single motor and 272 bhp, reaching 62 mph in 9.5 seconds. The VLE 400 4Matic gets a pair of motors, all-wheel drive and just over 400 bhp, hitting 62 mph in 6.5 seconds.

For those who need to tow, the VLE 400 can tow up to 2,500 kg, making it one of the best electric tow vehicles out there.

Interior: A Living Room on Wheels

Step inside the VLE and the word "van" quickly disappears from your mind.

Seating: The seating system allowed configurations for six to eight occupants across three rows. Individual seats or three-seat benches can be installed depending on customer preference, and some seats feature massage, lumbar support, calf support, and wireless charging.

The Roll & Go System: The manually operated seats feature four integrated wheels and can be effortlessly moved back and forth, locked in any position, or easily removed and rolled into the garage. This is a genuinely practical innovation that no rival currently offers.

Grand Comfort Seats: At the top end, you can get Mercedes' Grand Comfort seats, with massage, calf support, pillow headrests, and wireless charging

Boot Space: Boot space is impressive at 795 litres available when the powered seats are installed, and up to 4,078 litres if the seats are removed completely.

The 31-Inch 8K Cinema Screen: The Showstopper

If there is one feature that will make you stop and re-read, it is this.

Hidden in the headliner above the front seats is a retractable, 31.3-inch panoramic screen with 8K resolution, split-screen function, and an eight-megapixel camera — perfect for enjoying a movie, music videos, and games or for joining business video conferences.

A simple voice command does the magic. Saying "Hey Mercedes, start the cinema experience" transforms your VLE into a theater in motion: seats glide into a comfortable viewing position and the retractable screen reveals 8K resolution for your viewing pleasure.

Technology: MB.OS and MBUX Superscreen

The VLE is powered by the advanced Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS). The digital cockpit features three screens behind a large glass surface: a 10.25-inch driver display, a 14-inch central display, and a 14-inch screen for the front passenger. While the driver benefits from clear, focused information, the front passenger can enjoy a personalised entertainment experience such as video streaming, gaming, or apps.

The MBUX Virtual Assistant uses multi-agent generative AI and understands complex conversations with memory, responding like a friend. Over-the-air updates keep the VLE up to date for years, adding new features without the customer ever having to visit a dealer.

The sound system is equally premium: a 22-speaker Burmester 3D Surround Sound System with Dolby Atmos is available.

Ride Quality and Handling: Better Than You'd Expect

The new AIRMATIC air suspension with level control turns every journey into a remarkably serene experience, while rear-axle steering enhances agility — enabling a turning circle of just 35.75 feet (approximately 10.9 metres) despite the vehicle's considerable length.

The AirMatic air suspension can adjust ride height up to 1.5 inches and, for the first time, uses Google Maps data to "keep the vehicle as low as possible for as long as possible" to extend range and benefit from the VLE's aerodynamic drag coefficient.

Real-world reviewers agree the ride is exceptional. The VLE's air suspension does a great job of soaking up bumps, yet the ride never feels too floaty or bouncy. For ride comfort, the VLE is a step up on the Volkswagen ID. Buzz, as well as the Hyundai Ioniq 9 and Kia EV9.

Driver Assistance: MB.DRIVE

MB.DRIVE includes Distance Assist DISTRONIC and MB.DRIVE ASSIST, which adds semi-autonomous steering on motorways and a revolutionary Lane Change Assist. Just engage the turn signal and let the grand limousine handle the rest.

A head-up display with augmented reality comes as standard on higher trims, further reducing driver fatigue on long journeys.

Where Is It Built and When Does It Go on Sale?

The VLE is built in Spain, at the same factory that also builds the Mercedes EQV and Mercedes Vito.

The front-wheel-drive VLE 300 will launch first globally — including Europe, the US, and China. The all-new electric Mercedes-Benz VLE will appear on roads in the United States in 2027. UK sales are expected to start later in 2026. For India, an expected launch date has been indicated for late 2026, though official confirmation from Mercedes-Benz India is still awaited.

Who Is It For?

The VLE is aimed squarely at big families, executive shuttle services, and premium taxi operators who want space, luxury, and zero-emissions driving in one package.

In simple terms: if you have ever wished your business-class flight seat was a car, this is it. Hotel concierge fleets, corporate travel programmes, high-net-worth families — the VLE serves all of them without compromise.

What Makes It Truly Special?

The Mercedes-Benz VLE is special because it creates a category that did not exist before. It is not the most powerful EV, the smallest, or the cheapest. But it offers more range than any rival MPV (over 700 km WLTP), charges faster than almost anything else in its class (up to 315 kW), carries up to eight people in genuine luxury, and does it all with a 31-inch 8K cinema screen in the roof. It runs on a completely new electric platform, uses AI-powered voice control, adapts its ride height in real time using map data, and can remove its seats and double as a van if needed.

As Ola Källenius, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Group AG, put it: "It redefines the notion of space and comfort and adds a game-changing level of versatility and innovation.
