India's passenger vehicle industry closed August 2026 on a high note, with almost every major carmaker posting year-on-year growth. Maruti Suzuki held on to its position as the country's largest carmaker, Tata Motors extended its lead over Mahindra for second place, and Kia leapfrogged Toyota to grab the No. 5 spot for the first time. With the festive season just around the corner, August's numbers offer an early, and largely encouraging, preview of what dealers and buyers can expect in the coming months.
Here's a complete breakdown of how every major manufacturer performed in August 2026.
Car Sales in August 2026: Market Overview
August 2026 turned out to be one of the stronger months of the year for India's auto industry. Passenger vehicle wholesales rose sharply across nearly every manufacturer, continuing the momentum that has built up through the first five months of FY2026-27. Utility vehicles and SUVs once again did the heavy lifting, with brands like Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, Mahindra, Hyundai and Kia all reporting their best-ever or near-best August performances.
Commercial vehicles also had a strong month, with Tata Motors and Ashok Leyland posting double-digit growth, while two-wheeler majors TVS Motor and Bajaj Auto rode a wave of festive pre-buying and record electric-vehicle demand. Three-wheeler sales climbed too, led by Mahindra and Bajaj Auto, while tractor sales stayed positive overall despite mixed performances across individual companies.
For passenger cars specifically, the top five carmakers together sold well over 3.8 lakh units domestically, and most of them logged double-digit or even triple-digit year-on-year growth. Analysts widely see this as a sign that pent-up demand, new model launches, and improving consumer sentiment are converging just as the festive buying season begins.

| Renault | 2,842 | 3,293 | -14% | 3,015 | -5.7% |
(Figures represent domestic passenger vehicle wholesales unless stated otherwise.)
The pecking order at the top remained unchanged from July, but the gaps widened. Maruti Suzuki's lead over the rest of the pack grew even further, Tata Motors pulled further ahead of Mahindra, and Kia's record month allowed it to move past Toyota into fifth place — a first for the Korean carmaker in India.
Maruti Suzuki August 2026 Sales
Maruti Suzuki once again topped the charts as India's largest carmaker, with domestic passenger vehicle sales climbing 34.8% year-on-year to 1,76,971 units, up from 1,31,278 units in August 2025.
Breaking this down by segment:
- Utility vehicles (Brezza, Ertiga, e Vitara, Fronx, Grand Vitara, Invicto, Jimny, Victoris, XL6): 79,045 units
- Compact and mid-size cars (Baleno, Swift, Dzire, WagonR): 77,166 units
- Mini segment (Alto, S-Presso): 8,799 units
- Eeco: 11,961 units
Including exports (33,844 units) and sales to other OEMs (5,298 units), Maruti Suzuki's total company sales for August stood at 2,19,220 units, itself up 21% year-on-year. The company also crossed the milestone of 1 million total sales within the first five months of FY2026-27, underlining just how dominant its position remains in the Indian market.
Tata Motors August 2026 Sales
Tata Motors held firmly onto second place and widened its gap over Mahindra during the month. The company's domestic passenger vehicle sales rose 59% year-on-year to 65,253 units, up from 43,315 units in August 2025. On a month-on-month basis, sales were also up 4.2% compared to July 2026.
A major highlight was Tata's electric vehicle performance — EV sales (domestic plus international) nearly doubled, rising to 16,549 units from 8,540 units a year earlier, reflecting continued strong demand for models across its EV range.
On the commercial vehicle side, Tata Motors also had a strong showing, with total CV sales rising 49% year-on-year to 44,411 units. Domestic CV sales grew 33% to 36,619 units, while exports surged 227% to 7,792 units.
Notably, Tata Motors announced a price hike across its passenger vehicle range effective from September 1, 2026, which may have contributed to a small pre-hike buying push in the last days of August.
Mahindra August 2026 Sales
Mahindra & Mahindra remained in third place among passenger vehicle makers, with SUV sales rising 50% year-on-year to 59,257 units, compared to 39,399 units in August 2025. On a sequential basis, however, sales dipped marginally by 1.3% compared to July.
The growth was driven largely by strong demand for the updated Scorpio-N and the BE 6 SportEQ. During the month, Mahindra also introduced a Battery-as-a-Service option for its XEV 9e and XEV 9S electric SUVs, aimed at making EV ownership more affordable.
Looking at Mahindra's overall automotive business (including commercial vehicles, three-wheelers and exports), total sales stood at 1,07,648 units, up 42% year-on-year. Its commercial vehicle sales grew 28% to 42,337 units, while three-wheeler sales jumped 42% to 14,922 units. Exports across the group rose 71% to 6,054 units.
Hyundai August 2026 Sales
Hyundai Motor India held on to fourth place, with domestic sales rising 23.6% year-on-year to 54,396 units, up from 43,966 units in August 2025. The company said this was its highest-ever domestic sales figure for the month of August.
Including exports of 11,400 units, Hyundai's total sales (domestic plus exports) came in at 65,796 units, up 8.8% year-on-year.
During the month, Hyundai introduced an assured buyback programme for the Creta Electric, aimed at easing resale-value concerns for EV buyers. The company is also set to increase prices across its range from September 2026, which could influence early-festive-season buying patterns.
Kia Overtakes Toyota in August 2026
One of the biggest talking points of the month was Kia India's rise past Toyota to claim fifth place in the overall carmaker rankings — a first since Kia entered the Indian market in August 2019.
Kia dispatched 29,042 units in August 2026, up 48.1% year-on-year from 19,608 units in August 2025. This was the brand's best-ever August wholesale performance in India. The Seltos and Sonet continued to be Kia's primary volume drivers, while the recently launched Syros EV also contributed meaningfully to overall numbers.
Toyota Kirloskar Motor, by contrast, saw its domestic sales dip 3% year-on-year to 28,410 units, down from 29,302 units in August 2025. Despite the marginal decline, Toyota said it remains optimistic about the festive season, pointing to sustained demand for the Innova Hycross, Urban Cruiser Hyryder and Glanza.
Kia's year-to-date wholesales (January–August 2026) stood at 220,991 units, up 20.1% from 183,882 units in the same period of 2025 — a clear sign that the brand's growth is broad-based and not a one-month blip. Kia is also preparing to launch the Sorento — its first hybrid SUV for India — on September 4, 2026, which could add further momentum heading into the festive quarter.
Which Car Manufacturer Grew the Most in August 2026?
In percentage terms, Tata Motors posted the strongest year-on-year growth among the top manufacturers, with domestic PV sales up 59%. Mahindra followed closely with 50% growth, and Kia came in third with 48.1% growth — its best-ever August performance.
Among smaller players, Nissan posted the most dramatic jump, with domestic wholesales surging 147% year-on-year to 3,426 units, helped by strong demand for the Magnite and the newly launched Tekton. However, because Nissan's overall base (including exports) is comparatively small, its total company sales still declined 2% due to a drop in export volumes.
So depending on how you measure it:
- Highest growth among top-5 carmakers: Tata Motors (59% YoY)
- Highest growth among top-6 carmakers: Kia (48.1% YoY, and a historic rank change)
- Highest overall percentage growth (any carmaker): Nissan (147% YoY, domestic wholesales)
Why Did Car Sales Increase in August 2026?
Several factors combined to push August 2026 sales higher across the industry:
- Pre-festive season stocking: Dealers typically build up inventory ahead of Navratri and Diwali, and August is traditionally when this restocking cycle begins in earnest.
- New model and variant launches: Updates like the Mahindra Scorpio-N, BE 6 SportEQ, Kia Syros EV, and MG's Hector Tomahawk (EV and PHEV) gave several brands fresh volume drivers.
- Strong SUV and UV demand: Utility vehicles continued to outsell traditional hatchbacks and sedans, and manufacturers with strong SUV portfolios — Tata, Mahindra, Kia — benefited the most.
- Rising EV adoption: Tata Motors' EV sales nearly doubled, and Hyundai's buyback assurance programme for the Creta Electric points to manufacturers actively working to convert EV interest into sales.
- Anticipated price hikes: Both Tata Motors and Hyundai announced price increases effective September 2026, which likely encouraged some buyers to close purchases in August before prices rose.
- Improved consumer sentiment: Broader improvements in demand sentiment, supported by policy tailwinds, continued to underpin volumes across the passenger vehicle, commercial vehicle and two-wheeler segments alike.
Best-Performing Car Brands in August 2026
Taking growth, volume, and milestone achievements together, here are the standout performers of the month:
- Maruti Suzuki — Largest volume by a wide margin, plus its highest-ever monthly total sales figure and a crossing of the 1-million-unit mark for the fiscal year so far.
- Tata Motors — Fastest growth among the top three, widened its gap over Mahindra, and posted its EV sales almost doubling.
- Mahindra & Mahindra — 50% YoY SUV growth and 42% growth in overall automotive sales including exports.
- Kia — Historic move past Toyota into fifth place, its best-ever August performance since launching in India.
- Nissan — Fastest percentage growth in domestic wholesales among all listed carmakers (147% YoY).
- Hyundai — Its highest-ever domestic sales figure for the month of August.
What August 2026 Car Sales Mean for the Festive Season
Strong August numbers are typically read as an early indicator of festive-season demand, and 2026 appears to be following that pattern. With most manufacturers posting double-digit growth and several brands recording their best-ever August performances, dealers are likely entering the festive period with healthy order books and rising footfall.
A few signals worth watching as the festive season unfolds:
- Price hikes from Tata Motors and Hyundai starting September could either pull forward demand (as seen in late August) or slightly dampen fresh bookings once new prices kick in.
- New launches like the Kia Sorento (September 4) and MG's Hector Tomahawk EV/PHEV deliveries (starting September and November respectively) should add incremental volumes through the quarter.
- EV momentum, visible in Tata's near-doubling of EV sales and Hyundai's Creta Electric buyback push, suggests electric vehicles could play a bigger role in festive-season promotions than in previous years.
- SUV-led demand is expected to continue, with compact and mid-size SUVs remaining the primary battleground between Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, Mahindra, Hyundai and Kia.
Overall, the industry appears to be heading into Navratri and Diwali 2026 with considerable tailwind, though actual festive performance will depend on how effectively manufacturers convert August's positive momentum into retail sales at the dealership level.
Conclusion
August 2026 was a strong month for India's car industry, with Tata Motors, Maruti Suzuki and Mahindra leading growth among the top manufacturers, and Kia making history by overtaking Toyota for the first time. Nearly every major carmaker posted year-on-year gains, driven by robust SUV demand, new model launches, growing EV adoption, and early festive-season buying. With price hikes taking effect in September and new launches like the Kia Sorento on the horizon, all eyes will now be on whether this momentum carries through into the crucial festive quarter.
