This ₹6.85 Lakh Car Is Selling Like Crazy – Here’s Why in 2026

When May 2026 sales data was released in the first week of June, one figure stood out above everything else: the Maruti Fronx emerged as the highest-selling SUV in India with 20,686 units sold during May 2026, posting a 52.28% increase over the same month last year. A compact crossover starting at just ₹6.85 lakh ex-showroom had beaten the Tata Punch, the Tata Nexon, the Mahindra Scorpio, and the Hyundai Creta — all in a single month.

That is not a fluke. That is a statement.

India's Car Market in May 2026: A Record-Breaking Month

Before diving into the Fronx story, it is important to understand the stage on which it performed. Maruti Suzuki India posted a fresh monthly sales record, dispatching 2,42,688 vehicles in May 2026 — crossing its earlier all-time monthly high of 2,39,646 units recorded in April 2026.

The company sold 1,93,535 vehicles in the domestic market during May 2026, marking its best-ever monthly domestic performance. Domestic passenger vehicle sales stood at 1,90,337 units, marking a healthy 40% year-on-year growth over 1,35,962 units in the same month last year.

The overall industry too was on fire. Combined sales of the top 10 cars stood at 1,89,908 units in May 2026, up 32.8% from 1,43,000 units sold in May 2025. The top 15 SUVs performed even better, recording sales of 1,94,225 units — a growth of 40.34% year-on-year.

The rising tide lifted many boats, but the Fronx rose the highest.

The Top 5 Best-Selling SUVs: Where Did Everyone Else Stand?

Here is the full top 5 SUV rankings from May 2026:

1. Maruti Suzuki Fronx — 20,686 units (+52% YoY)

2. Tata Punch — 20,208 units (+54% YoY)

3. Tata Nexon — 19,100 units (+46% YoY)

4. Mahindra Scorpio — 15,774 units (+10% YoY)

5. Hyundai Creta — 15,253 units (+3% YoY)

Together, Punch and Nexon alone accounted for over 39,000 units, highlighting Tata Motors' strong position in the SUV market. And yet, the Fronx edged past both of them individually to claim the top spot.

Fronx was Maruti's second-best-selling model overall in May 2026 with 20,686 units, behind only the Dzire sedan which topped all cars with 24,546 units. That means the Fronx was the second most popular passenger vehicle in the entire country — hatchbacks, sedans, and SUVs included.

Why Is the Fronx Selling Like Crazy? Let's Break It Down

1. The Price Is Simply Unbeatable

The Maruti Suzuki Fronx price in India starts at ₹6.85 lakh, making it an affordable crossover sold through Nexa showrooms. The range tops out at ₹11.84 lakh ex-showroom for the Alpha turbo variant. Compare this to its nearest rival, the Tata Nexon, which starts at ₹7.37 lakh, or the Hyundai Creta at ₹10.79 lakh. The Fronx offers buyers an entry into the SUV world for a price closer to a premium hatchback. In a price-sensitive market like India, that is an enormous psychological and financial advantage.

A GST revision in late 2025 further sweetened the deal — the Maruti Suzuki Fronx received a price cut in the range of ₹73,600 to ₹1.13 lakh, making its new starting price ₹6.85 lakh ex-showroom. This single move likely unlocked an entirely new category of buyers who were previously sitting on the fence.

2. A Strong, Multi-Powertrain Strategy

The Fronx is available with three engine options — a 1.2-litre K-Series naturally aspirated petrol, a CNG variant, and a 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol — with both manual and automatic transmissions on offer. This multi-powertrain approach is a masterstroke. The CNG variant appeals to budget-conscious buyers worried about rising petrol prices. The 1.0-litre turbo petrol satisfies those who want a punchy, fun-to-drive experience. And the naturally aspirated base engine keeps the entry price as low as possible.

The ARAI-claimed mileage for the Fronx ranges from 20.01 to 22.89 kmpl for petrol variants. In a market where fuel economy remains a top buying criterion, these numbers matter enormously.

3. Premium Features at a Non-Premium Price

The base Sigma variant includes 6 airbags, ESC, power windows, and AC. Mid-range trims add a 7-inch touchscreen, 4 speakers, steering controls, AMT, LED lighting, rear camera, wireless charging, and push-button start. The top variants get a 9-inch touchscreen, head-up display, 360-degree camera, cruise control, and premium styling elements.

The Fronx was also rated 5-star in the ASEAN NCAP safety test, giving buyers peace of mind on the safety front without paying a premium for it. Six airbags as standard across all variants is a rare offering in this price bracket, and Maruti has made it a key selling point.

4. The Nexa Premium Experience

The Fronx is sold exclusively through Maruti's Nexa dealership network — the premium retail channel that carries a more upscale, modern showroom experience. Good-looking design, a well-equipped cabin, and a smart set of powertrains attract buyers to this model, and it is expected to get a facelift sometime this year. The Nexa branding gives buyers a sense of aspiration and exclusivity while the price remains approachable.

5. Maruti's Unmatched Service and Resale Network

A critical but often overlooked reason for Maruti's dominance in India is its unparalleled service network and resale value. Across Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, choosing Maruti often means the nearest authorized service centre is just a few kilometres away. Resale values for Maruti cars consistently outperform the competition. For first-time car buyers — a major buying demographic in India — this safety net is a powerful purchasing trigger.

6. The SUV Body Style in a Hatchback Package

Based on the iconic Baleno platform, the Fronx embodies nearly the same character in a compact SUV body type. It is essentially Maruti's way to sell the Baleno as an SUV — and SUVs are the car body style of choice for India's buyers today. The coupe-SUV silhouette gives the car a premium, youthful appearance. The Fronx's coupe SUV styling gives it a distinct and noteworthy stance, and higher variants are well-equipped with all essential comfort and convenience features. The suspension setup also offers good shock absorption, resulting in comfortable ride quality.

Maruti's Broader SUV Surge

The Fronx's success is not an isolated event — it is part of a broader Maruti SUV juggernaut. Maruti Suzuki's utility vehicle range recorded 79,267 units in May 2026, up 44.4% from 54,899 units in the same month last year. This segment includes the Grand Vitara, Brezza, Fronx, Jimny, Ertiga, XL6, Invicto, and Victoris.

The Fronx's rise also comes at an interesting internal moment: the Maruti Brezza recorded 13,245 units in May 2026, down 14.91% year-on-year, making it the only major SUV in the top ranks to post a significant decline — likely due to an anticipated facelift launch. Buyers who may have otherwise chosen a Brezza appear to have shifted to the Fronx, which was refreshed at a lower price point.

Month-on-Month Consistency: Not Just a One-Month Wonder

The Fronx has been building momentum all year. In April 2026, the total sales figure for the Fronx was 18,829 units, a 17.47% month-on-month growth from the previous month. The jump to 20,686 units in May represents another 9.9% sequential gain. This is sustained, compounding growth — not a promotional spike.

What's Coming Next: The Hybrid Fronx

The story does not end with the current model. A Maruti Fronx strong hybrid test mule has been spotted testing in India, featuring a unique 'hybrid' badge. The new setup is expected to use a 1.2-litre engine in a series-hybrid configuration. With hybrid technology promising mileage figures north of 35 kmpl and the anticipated addition of ADAS features, the next-generation Fronx is set to make an already compelling package even harder to ignore.

The Verdict: Why This Car Has India's Attention

The Maruti Suzuki Fronx's May 2026 performance tells a simple but powerful story. In a market that is simultaneously demanding more features, better safety, lower prices, and better fuel economy, the Fronx delivers across every single axis. It is not the flashiest car on the market. It does not have the most powerful engine. It does not carry the most aspirational badge.

But it hits the sweet spot that Indian car buyers actually live in — the intersection of affordability, reliability, style, and practicality. At ₹6.85 lakh, with six airbags standard, coupe-SUV styling, multiple powertrain options, and the Maruti service network backing it up, the Fronx makes an argument that is extremely difficult to counter.

20,686 families agreed in May alone. And if the trajectory holds, June 2026 might tell an even bigger story.
