Ex-showroom is not what you pay. Pick your state and trim to see the road tax, insurance and charges on top — the tax alone differs by more than a lakh between states on the same car.

₹

Pre-filled at about 3.5% of ex-showroom, which is typical for a first-year comprehensive policy. Your actual quote depends on cover, add-ons and the insurer — change it if you have a real quote.

Triumph Scrambler 400 XC: The Off-Road-Leaning Half of Triumph's Baby Scrambler Pair The Scrambler 400 XC is built on the same small-capacity platform as the rest of Triumph's entry range, but it is set up to take broken roads and light trails more seriously than its showroom-mate, the Scrambler 400 X. At Rs 3.01 lakh ex-showroom, it uses the 349cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine shared across the family, here tuned to put out 37 PS at 8,500 rpm and 32 Nm at 7,000 rpm, sent through a 6-speed gearbox with a wet, multi-plate assist-and-slip clutch. Those are not big numbers for a motorcycle costing 3 lakh, but the single pulls cleanly through the middle of the rev range rather than needing to be revved hard, which suits a bike that is going to spend as much time picking through city traffic as it does out on a dirt road. What actually separates the XC from the X is the chassis hardware. It runs a 19-inch front wheel on wire spokes instead of an 18-inch alloy, and both ends get 150mm of wheel travel from 43mm upside-down big-piston forks up front and a remote-reservoir gas monoshock at the rear with adjustable preload. Braking is handled by a 320mm front disc with a 4-piston caliper and a 230mm rear disc with a single-piston caliper, backed by dual-channel ABS that includes an off-road mode so the rear wheel is free to slide a bit when you want it to. Ground clearance comes in at 195mm on a 1,417mm wheelbase, which is enough to clear a speed breaker or a rutted farm track without the bike feeling top-heavy when you are threading it through a parking lot. Kerb weight is listed at 191kg and the seat height at 835mm, both of which place it closer to an adventure bike than a city commuter, so a shorter rider should sit on one before deciding. A 13-litre tank combined with an ARAI-claimed 26.31 kmpl should comfortably clear 300km between fills, which is enough for a day trip out of town without worrying about where the next pump is. This is a bike for someone who already has a practical daily ride and wants a second motorcycle that looks like an old dirt-tracker but underneath has a modern slipper clutch, switchable ABS and proper long-travel suspension. In Storm Grey, Vanilla White or Racing Yellow, it comes across as more deliberately styled than a Royal Enfield Scram 440 and sits in roughly the same conversation as the Himalayan 450 for buyers who want some off-road ability without stepping up to a full-size adventure tourer. The trade-off against an Enfield is a thinner Triumph dealer network and higher running costs, but most people shopping in this bracket already know that and are paying for the badge, the finish and the way the engine feels rather than chasing the lowest service bill.
