Ex-showroom is not what you pay. Pick your state and trim to see the road tax, insurance and charges on top — the tax alone differs by more than a lakh between states on the same car.

Pre-filled at about 3.5% of ex-showroom, which is typical for a first-year comprehensive policy. Your actual quote depends on cover, add-ons and the insurer — change it if you have a real quote.

KTM builds two very different 890 Adventure bikes, and the R is the one set up for riders who actually want to leave the tarmac. The 889cc parallel-twin makes 104.6PS at 8,000rpm and 100Nm at 6,500rpm, numbers shared across the 890 Adventure family, but the R gets longer-travel WP XPLOR suspension — a 48mm upside-down fork and a PDS rear shock — built for rougher terrain than the standard bike's setup. Kerb weight is around 215kg, the seat sits at 880mm, and a 20-litre tank with a further 3-litre reserve gives the kind of range a rider actually needs once the tar runs out and the nearest fuel pump is a long way off. The electronics match the intent. KTM fits a 6D inertial measurement unit for its Motorcycle Traction Control, which allows genuine lean-sensitive stability control rather than a crude on/off system, and the ride-mode list includes a dedicated Offroad mode and a Rally mode built for exactly the kind of loose, technical riding this bike is aimed at. Braking is handled by 320mm twin front discs with four-piston calipers and a 260mm rear disc, backed by dual-channel ABS that itself has an offroad setting to allow some front-wheel slide on loose surfaces rather than locking up. A 5-inch TFT display with optional Bluetooth connectivity sits at the dash, and KTM offers a Quickshifter+ and cruise control as factory options. The frame is tubular chromoly steel using the engine as a stressed member, and it comes fitted with Mitas Enduro Trail tyres tuned specifically for this bike rather than off-the-shelf rubber. At Rs 15.8 lakh ex-showroom, the 890 Adventure R sits in the segment of serious, mid-size adventure tourers — bikes meant for riders planning actual multi-day trips through places like Ladakh or Spiti where a chunk of the route is unpaved, rather than riders who want adventure styling for a daily commute. It competes less on outright comfort than on how composed it stays once the road turns to gravel, broken tar, or a dry riverbed crossing. Within KTM's own lineup it sits below the bigger 1290 Super Adventure S in both price and outright power, but ahead of it in off-road ability — the trade KTM makes with the R is less touring comfort and switchgear sophistication for a chassis genuinely built to take a beating off-road. It comes in KTM's signature orange, which by now is as much a part of this bike's identity as the engine underneath it. For a buyer weighing this against the standard 890 Adventure, the R's longer-travel suspension and more off-road-biased stance come at some cost to low-speed comfort on tarmac — it's taller, firmer, and clearly set up with gravel and trail sections in mind rather than pure highway cruising. That trade works well for riders who genuinely plan routes with unpaved stretches, river crossings or mountain passes, but it's worth a proper test ride before committing if most of the planned use is actually on sealed roads, where the standard Adventure might suit just as well for less money.
