Ex-showroom is not what you pay. Pick your state and trim to see the road tax, insurance and charges on top — the tax alone differs by more than a lakh between states on the same car.

The sharpest Duke KTM sells in India right now. The 390 Duke R sits at the top of KTM's small-capacity naked range, priced at Rs 3.47 lakh ex-showroom, and India gets just the one fully-loaded trim, no base version to downgrade to, no feature you have to pay extra for. Pick your paint between Gun Metal Grey, Electronic Orange and Atlantic Blue and the motorcycle underneath is identical. Power comes from KTM's 398.63cc single-cylinder, liquid-cooled motor, making 46 PS at 8,500 rpm and 39 Nm at 6,500 rpm, sent through a six-speed gearbox with an assist-and-slipper clutch. That is enough to push a 168.3 kg motorcycle to a claimed top speed of 167 kmph, and because the R gets sharper throttle mapping than the regular 390 Duke, it feels most alive between 4,000 and 8,000 rpm, exactly where you end up riding on a ghat road or filtering through city traffic in second and third gear. The chassis is where the R badge earns its keep. Fully adjustable WP Apex 43mm upside-down forks sit up front with a matching adjustable monoshock at the back, and KTM has fitted a 320mm front disc with a four-piston caliper, backed by dual-channel ABS, so stopping power never feels like the weak link. Lean the bike into a corner with any enthusiasm and the suspension holds its line without the vagueness that cheaper naked bikes show once you push past seven-tenths. Day to day, the 390 Duke R is friendlier than its spec sheet suggests. The 5-inch TFT dash runs Bluetooth connectivity and turn-by-turn navigation, there is a quickshifter, cruise control for highway stretches, switchable traction control for wet mornings, and three riding modes, Track, Street and Rain, so the same bike that is sharp enough for a weekend trackday also behaves on a rainy commute. An 800mm seat height keeps it manageable for most Indian riders, and the 15-litre tank, with 3 litres in reserve, supports a day's highway run before the fuel light becomes a concern, with mileage figures of around 30 kmpl reported in real-world use. Who buys this bike. Riders who have already owned a 200 or 250cc KTM and want more bite without jumping to a litre-class machine, or riders cross-shopping the TVS Apache RR310 and Bajaj Pulsar NS400Z and wanting the one with the most race-bred chassis. The Apache RR310 makes a claimed 38 PS and 29 Nm at 174 kg kerb weight, and the Pulsar NS400Z makes 40 PS and 33 Nm at 176 kg, so on paper the Duke R out-muscles both while weighing less than either. Against the Yamaha R3 and MT-03 crowd it trades the smoothness of a twin-cylinder motor for a single that is lighter, cheaper to service, and feels more urgent low down, a trade most buyers in this segment are happy to make. Servicing runs through KTM's dealer network, which has grown enough in most Tier-1 and Tier-2 Indian cities that spares and routine maintenance are no longer the headache they once were.
