Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles ended September 2026 on a strong note, recording 70,210 units in total passenger vehicle sales compared with 60,907 units in September 2025, marking a 15% year-on-year increase. Domestic sales also grew 15% to 68,810 units, while exports increased by 13% to 1,400 units.
The September performance was particularly important as it helped Tata Motors close its best-ever quarter, with Q2 FY27 sales reaching 2,01,723 units, up 40% year-on-year. Electric vehicles were one of the major contributors to this growth, with September EV sales rising 67% and quarterly EV sales increasing 90% compared with the previous year. CNG models also recorded their highest-ever quarterly sales, showing the growing contribution of alternative powertrains to Tata's overall volumes.
In this article, we take a closer look at Tata Motors' September 2026 sales, the performance of its key vehicle segments and powertrains, and the factors behind the company's strong quarterly numbers.
Tata Motors September 2026 Sales: Quick Overview
- Total sales (domestic + exports): 70,210 units, up 15.27% from 60,907 units in September 2025.
- Domestic sales: 68,810 units, up 15.32% from 59,667 units a year earlier.
- Exports: 1,400 units against 1,240 units a year ago, up 12.90%.
- Month-on-month: domestic volumes rose 5.45% from August 2026's 65,253 units.
- EV sales: 15,384 units against 9,191 units a year earlier, up 67.38%.
- Milestone: Tata's CEO said the company crossed the 70,000-unit sales mark in September.
Domestic sales beat expectations too. Zee Business reported that the 68,810-unit domestic figure exceeded analysts' estimates.
Tata Car Sales in September 2026 vs September 2025
The year-on-year comparison is the headline of this blog, but the base matters.
September 2025 was an exceptional month. Tata reported its best-ever monthly passenger vehicle sales of 60,907 units, up 47% year-on-year, helped by the GST rate cut and Navratri demand. Beating a record month by 15% is a strong result.
In absolute terms, domestic sales rose by 9,143 units, and total sales (including exports) by 9,303 units.
Growth looks smaller than in the previous two months because of that high base. July 2026 sales of 62,611 units were up 58% year-on-year. August 2026 dispatches of 65,253 units were up 59%. Those months were compared against weaker, pre-GST-cut months of 2025. September's 15% came against the first month of the post-GST 2.0 demand surge.
Tata Cars That Contributed to September Sales
Tata's model-wise breakup for September 2026 had not been published at the time of writing, so I won't quote unit numbers I can't verify. The July and August breakups, the latest confirmed, show the pattern behind the September total.
Punch: The micro SUV is the volume leader. It sold 21,320 units in August, nearly double the 10,704 of August 2025. Tata's quarterly release also stated that Punch (ICE + EV) was India's highest-selling SUV in the July–September quarter.
Nexon: It sold 18,431 units in August, up 32% year-on-year, and together with Punch made up nearly 61% of Tata's dispatches.
Tiago: The hatchback is a quiet growth story. Tiago sold 8,537 units in August, up 63% year-on-year and 15% month-on-month. The Tiago and Tiago.ev received a heavy facelift on 28 May 2026, with ICE prices starting at ₹4.7 lakh.
Sierra: The launch buzz has settled. Sierra sales peaked at 9,003 units in March, then settled in the 6,000–6,500 range. August came in at 5,622 units, down 11% from July.
Harrier and Safari: Harrier and Harrier EV sold 3,577 units in August, up 15.87% year-on-year.
Altroz: This was the soft spot. It fell 23% year-on-year in August, from 3,959 to 3,047 units.
New products: Tata also added to its lineup during the quarter. It strengthened the portfolio with the Curvv SeriesX, the Sierra Legend Series and the all-new Tata Aeris. The Aeris is the third facelift of the Tigor, renamed and unveiled on 25 September 2026, so it hasn't had time to move the September numbers.
Why Did Tata Car Sales Increase in September 2026?
Tata's executives and the data point to several causes.
1. GST 2.0 demand is still working through the market. Tata's CEO said passenger vehicle demand sustained the strong momentum seen after GST 2.0, despite the quarter being seasonally softer. The lower tax rates on small cars and SUVs made entry-level and compact models noticeably cheaper.
2. A strong market overall. Industry Vahan registrations grew around 24% year-on-year in Q2 FY27, led by greener powertrains.
3. The EV and CNG mix. EVs and CNG vehicles together contributed 51% of Tata's passenger vehicle sales in Q2 FY27. Tata sells EV and CNG versions across most of its range, from Tiago to Nexon and Punch, so it benefits when buyers move away from petrol and diesel.
4. New launches and refreshes. The Tiago facelift in May, the Curvv SeriesX and the Sierra Legend Series gave dealers newer products to sell.
5. Festive stocking. Tata said it enters the festive period with a strong order book and plans to progressively scale up production to meet demand. Dispatches in September also reflect dealers stocking up ahead of Navratri and Diwali. This is my reading of the usual seasonal pattern rather than something Tata stated.
A caution: Tata's 15% domestic dispatch growth is below the roughly 24% Vahan registration growth for the industry quoted above. Those measure different things (dispatches against registrations, and different time frames), so the figures aren't directly comparable. Even so, it suggests competitors are also growing fast, and that Tata's year-on-year growth is no longer far ahead of the market as it was in the summer months.
Tata EV Sales in September 2026
EVs were the strongest part of the month.
- September EV sales: 15,384 units against 9,191 units a year ago, up 67.38%.
- EV share of the month: about 21.91% of monthly volume, against 15.09% in September 2025.
- Contribution to growth: EVs contributed around two-thirds of the overall annual volume increase.
- Quarterly EV record: 47,150 units in July–September 2026, up 89.70% from 24,855 units a year earlier.
- Penetration: EVs were about 23% of Tata's portfolio in the quarter, which the CEO compared with about 8% for the industry. That industry figure is Tata's own claim.
CNG also posted record numbers. CNG vehicles had their highest-ever quarterly sales and accounted for 28% of Tata's volumes.
How Tata's September Sales Compare With Previous Months
Domestic passenger vehicle sales rose steadily through the quarter:
- July 2026: 62,611 units (+58% YoY)
- August 2026: 65,253 units (+59% YoY)
- September 2026: 68,810 units (+15% YoY, against the record-high September 2025 base)
The three months add up to the quarter's domestic total. Q2 FY27 domestic sales were 1,96,674 units, up 40.29% from 1,40,189 units, and total sales including exports were 2,01,723 units, a 39.70% rise from 1,44,397. Tata called it its highest-ever quarter.
The sequential growth into September was modest. The record EV and CNG numbers suggest the mix is shifting more than the volume is jumping.
What September Sales Mean for Car Buyers
Expect strong festive demand: Tata says it has a strong order book. Popular models such as Punch, Nexon and the EV variants may carry waiting periods if you book late. Check with your dealer for the variant and colour you want.
Discounts may be selective: With a strong order book on its best-sellers, discounts on those models may be limited. Slower-moving models, such as the Altroz, which was down in August, are more likely to carry offers. This is my inference, not a Tata statement, so compare dealer quotes.
EV and CNG buyers have more choice: With EV and CNG at about half of Tata's volumes, there are options from the Tiago up to the Harrier EV. Weigh your daily running distance and charging access before choosing.
Newer products are arriving: The Aeris (the renamed Tigor) and the Curvv SeriesX are new. Check current prices and availability on Tata's website or at a dealer before deciding.
Dispatches are not deliveries: The sales figures show what Tata shipped to dealers. Retail registrations (Vahan data) show what customers actually took home, so check both when judging real demand.
Conclusion
September 2026 was a solid month for Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles: 70,210 total units, a 15% year-on-year gain against a record base, and the company's first month above 70,000. The quarter was the best Tata has ever had, at over 2 lakh units. EVs, which grew 67% in the month and 90% in the quarter, were the biggest drivers, and Punch and Nexon remain the volume anchors.
Growth has cooled from the 58–59% of July and August to 15%, mainly because last September was so strong. The festive months will show whether Tata can keep pace with an industry growing faster than its own dispatches. Model-wise September data should be published within days, and I'd update the model section when it is.
