India's Electric Future: The Rise of 7-Seater EVs

India's electric vehicle (EV) landscape is undergoing a significant transformation, with the introduction of 7-seater electric cars catering to the growing demand for eco-friendly family transportation. These vehicles promise to offer spacious interiors, advanced technology, and impressive driving ranges, making them an attractive option for large families seeking sustainable mobility solutions.

 

BYD eMAX 7: Pioneering the 7-Seater EV Segment

 

In March 2025, BYD launched the eMAX 7, India's first 6- and 7-seater electric MPV. Priced between ₹26.90 lakh and ₹29.90 lakh, the eMAX 7 is available in two variants: Premium and Superior. The Superior variant boasts a 71.8 kWh battery offering a range of 530 km, while the Premium variant comes with a 55.4 kWh battery delivering 420 km on a single charge. Both variants feature BYD's Blade Battery Technology and an 8-in-1 electric powertrain system, ensuring safety and efficiency .

The eMAX 7's design includes a spacious cabin with a 2,800 mm wheelbase, a 12.8-inch rotatable infotainment display, and a 1.42 sqm panoramic glass roof. Safety features encompass six airbags, ABS, EBD, and an Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS). Additionally, the vehicle supports Vehicle-to-Load (VTOL) functionality, allowing it to power external devices .​

 

Kia Carens EV: Affordable Family Electric MPV

 

Kia is set to introduce the Carens EV, an all-electric version of its popular 7-seater MPV, in 2025. Expected to be priced between ₹18 lakh and ₹25 lakh, the Carens EV aims to make electric mobility accessible to a broader audience. The vehicle is anticipated to offer a driving range of 400-500 km and support DC fast charging, making it suitable for long-distance travel .​

The Carens EV is likely to share its platform with the Hyundai Creta EV, ensuring a balance between performance and affordability. Its MPV design offers ample space, making it an ideal choice for large families seeking a practical electric vehicle.​

 

Mahindra's Plans for a 7-Seater Electric SUV

 

Mahindra has expressed interest in launching a 7-seater version of its XEV 9e electric SUV, based on the company's new INGLO platform. While the 9e is currently available as a 5-seater, Mahindra's CEO, Rajesh Jejurikar, has indicated that a 7-seater variant could be introduced if there is sufficient demand. The company aims to maximize volumes for electric vehicles and is prepared to expedite the development of the 9e 7-seater to meet market needs.​

Challenges and Opportunities in the EV Market

 

Despite the promising developments, India's EV market faces several challenges. The adoption rate remains low, with EVs accounting for only 2% of total car sales. However, the Indian government has set an ambitious target to increase this to 30% by 2030. To achieve this, there is a need for significant improvements in charging infrastructure, battery technology, and consumer awareness.

Automakers are responding to these challenges by investing in research and development to enhance vehicle performance and reduce costs. The introduction of 7-seater electric vehicles is a step towards meeting the diverse needs of Indian consumers, offering them sustainable and practical transportation options.​

The launch of 7-seater electric vehicles like the BYD eMAX 7 and the upcoming Kia Carens EV marks a significant milestone in India's journey towards sustainable mobility.
