Renault Duster Set to Make a Comeback in India with Bold New Avatar

After years of speculation and anticipation, Renault India has officially confirmed the comeback of its iconic SUV, the Renault Duster. Once a segment leader that helped establish the compact SUV category in India, the Duster is all set to return in an all-new avatar in 2025.

Renault India released a teaser earlier this week, hinting at the bold re-entry of the Duster, sparking excitement among auto enthusiasts and former Duster loyalists. Sources close to the company reveal that the SUV will be based on the CMF-B platform, developed by the Renault-Nissan Alliance, making it larger, safer, and more premium than its predecessor.

A Modern Rebirth

The new-generation Duster will feature contemporary design elements, muscular stance, and a more aggressive front fascia, inspired by the global model unveiled in Europe last year. Industry insiders suggest the India-spec model will stay true to the global version in terms of design, while adapting key features for the Indian market.

Expected highlights include:

  • Full-LED headlamps and DRLs
  • Larger alloy wheels (17 or 18-inch options)
  • Panoramic sunroof
  • Dual-screen setup (digital instrument cluster and infotainment)
  • ADAS features (in top variants)
  • 6 airbags standard across variants

Powertrain Options

The upcoming Duster is likely to be offered with multiple powertrain options:

  • 1.2L turbo-petrol mild-hybrid
  • 1.6L strong hybrid (e-power variant)
  • A diesel option may also be in consideration, depending on demand and emission compliance.

Manual and CVT gearbox options are expected, while an AWD variant might return, catering to off-road enthusiasts.

Launch Timeline and Positioning

Renault is expected to launch the all-new Duster in early 2025, with an official unveiling possibly by late 2024. The SUV will compete with strong rivals in the mid-size SUV segment, including the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Maruti Grand Vitara, Honda Elevate, and the upcoming Tata Curvv.

To make a strong comeback, Renault is also planning an aggressive pricing strategy, likely starting around ₹10 lakh and going up to ₹18 lakh (ex-showroom) for the top trims.

Legacy of the Duster

First launched in India in 2012, the Renault Duster quickly became a game-changer with its rugged design and powerful diesel engine. It was among the first SUVs to bring AWD capabilities to the compact segment and helped Renault build a strong presence in the Indian market.

Despite being phased out in 2022 due to outdated design and lack of compliance with evolving regulations, the Duster still enjoys a cult-like following. The return of the SUV is expected to rekindle that legacy.

The Duster's comeback aligns with Renault’s broader strategy to revamp its product portfolio in India and capture a significant chunk of the growing SUV market. With its new-gen design, hybrid powertrains, and focus on premium features, the Duster could once again become a formidable name in Indian households.
