Volvo to launch electric SUV EX30 in India this year

Swedish luxury carmaker Volvo has officially announced that its highly anticipated electric SUV, EX30, will be launched in the Indian market this year. This move is expected to further Volvo’s electrification strategy and strengthen the company’s commitment to sustainable transportation in India. With the growing demand for electric vehicles and the government’s efforts to promote clean energy, the arrival of the EX30 could bring a major shift in the premium EV segment.

Volvo’s Focus on Electric Vehicles in India

Volvo has been making rapid strides in the EV segment. Jyoti Malhotra, Managing Director of Volvo India, stated that 25% of the company’s total sales last year came from electric models like the XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge. He said, “The Indian market is moving towards electric mobility, and we are committed to being a part of this transformation.”

The EX30 has already gained popularity in international markets, and its arrival in India is expected to further strengthen Volvo’s EV share.

What Makes the Volvo EX30 Special?

Volvo is positioning the EX30 as its most compact and affordable electric SUV, designed for customers who prioritize luxury, performance, and sustainability. In international markets, it is available in three variants:

• Single Motor Standard Range – 49 kWh battery with 272 PS power and an estimated range of 337 km.
• Single Motor Extended Range – 65 kWh battery, increasing the range to 476 km.
• Twin Motor Performance Variant – 428 PS power and 450 km range, making it one of the most powerful SUVs in its segment.

The SUV features Volvo’s signature Thor’s Hammer LED headlights, an attractive design, and 20-inch alloy wheels, giving it a futuristic and powerful look. It also includes Volvo’s ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System) technology.

Feature-Packed Interior

The EX30’s interior is minimalistic yet premium in design. It includes a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Harman Kardon sound system, wireless Apple CarPlay, panoramic sunroof, wireless charging, and a digital driver display.

Will It Be Assembled in India?

Reports suggest that Volvo is evaluating the possibility of local assembly at its Bengaluru plant. If assembled in India, the SUV’s pricing could be more competitive. Although the official price has not been announced yet, industry experts estimate an expected starting price of ₹50 lakh (ex-showroom). In this price segment, it will compete with premium electric SUVs like the Hyundai Ioniq 5, BYD Seal, and Atto 3.

What This Means for Indian EV Buyers?

Government subsidies, expanding charging infrastructure, and rising fuel prices are driving the demand for electric vehicles in India. In this scenario, the Volvo EX30, with its combination of luxury, safety, and performance, has the potential to attract more consumers to the EV segment.

Volvo is also planning to launch its new XC60 SUV in India this year, further strengthening its premium and electric car portfolio. However, the company will continue to offer petrol models, as demand for them remains steady. In the long run, Volvo aims to transition its entire lineup to electric.
